Man with double PhD begging on streets

With a double PhD, this man was begging in the streets

Jaipur: Dinesh Dwivedi, age 50, a retired school teacher, spent large parts of his day begging in the streets of Jaipur.

He has a pension of Rs. 35,000 a month, and owns a small haveli in the walled city of Jaipur and shops in this crowded market place.

But Mr Dwivedi, a double PhD in Sanskrit, was beaten often by his son, a 25-year-old with an alleged drug habit.

"I begged him again and again, with folded hands, to spare me...but he would hit me with a stone...or a stick."

Mr Dwivedi has three children. His elder daughter is married but his younger son and daughter live with him. His son, Saurabh, is unmarried and is a school dropout.

"I was not born addicted to smack," he says, sitting on the steps at his father's house. "I was tricked into addiction by people who want to grab the property that my father and I own."

But neighbours say Saurabh beats both his father and his younger sister mercilessly. He also sells anything he can lay his hands on in the house to pay for his drug habits.

Local government officials heard of Mr Dwivedi's plight through media reports today and showed up this afternoon at his house in Bhrampuri in Jaipur's old city to help. They went out looking for him with his son, and found him begging only two lanes away from his house. Mr Dwivedi, who could barely crawl on the road, was then moved to a state-run home for senior citizens.

For the past five years, however, in a busy neighbourhood, neighbours and people who lived inside Mr Dwivedi's house on rent, walked past him as he asked strangers for a few coins without intervening.

What punishment should we give to such an idiotic son?

Direct cash transfer scheme

The Direct Cash Transfer, a new system under which the beneficiaries receive cash directly in their bank accounts.

What is direct cash transfer of subsidies?

#The Direct Cash Transfer, a new system under which the beneficiaries receive cash directly in their bank accounts, is expected to enable delivery of the government's subsidies and welfare measures to the intended targets without pilferage.

#To make things simpler, instead of fuel, fertiliser and food subsidiesgiven to BPL families, the scheme will involve direct cash transfer to their bank account, that is Rs 32,000 per year.

#To avail the direct cash transfer of subsidies one must be registered under the Aadhar scheme.

#The DCT architecture, being anchored by the planning commission, involves departments of financial services, unique identity authority (Aadhaar), information technology, expenditure, posts, rural development, social justice and empowerment, tribal affairs, minority affairs, higher education, school education, health and family welfare, women and child development, labour and employment, petroleum and natural gas, fertilizers, and food and public distribution.

What is the amount of subsidy a household is offered?

#BPL families will get Rs 32,000 per year.

#The government has fixed the poverty line at Rs 66.10 per day for urban areas and Rs 35.10 for rural regions.

How will the cash be transferred?

#The government plans to conduct the transfer through the bank account that is link with the Aadhaar Unique Identification (UID) scheme.

# The Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI), which is implementing the Aadhar scheme, has already enumerated around 200 million people from 2006 to now and has a target of reaching 600 million people within the next 18 months.

#Consumers will have to buy goods (food, kerosene, etc) at market price. The subsidy component in rupees will later be deposited in their bank accounts.  To implement the project, banks will pitch in as part of their financial inclusion drive to help people open bank accounts.

When will the scheme be implemented?

#The government has already announced that transfer of subsidy directly into bank accounts of beneficiaries in 51 districts will start from January 2013 with a target to cover the entire nation by April 2014. To ensure this, the planning commission has decided that all new schemes will now be enabled by Aadhaar number.

#Initially, the government will implement the scheme for cash transfer to the beneficiaries' accounts in 51 districts from January 1, 2013. The scheme will be worked in 18 states from April and in the rest of the country later in 2013, Manmohan Singh said.

#The subsidies and schemes are worth Rs 3.23 lakh crore ($65 billion) and the DCT is scheduled for launch on January 1.

#The scheme will cover 18 states and union territories by April 2013 and it will be extended to 16 more states and union territories by April 2014, according to the prime minister's office.

# The government can immediately roll out the cash transfer scheme for certain welfare schemes such as scholarships and pensions and unemployment allowance, as pilot projects had been executed in certain parts of the country, including in East Delhi.

What are the Benefits of direct cash transfer scheme?

#The scheme is expected to cut down waste and corruption in distribution of subsidised items, the prime minister said, chairing the first meeting of the National Committee on Direct Transfers.

#The ultimate aim of this move is "a completely electronic cash transfer system for the entire population", an official in the PMO said.

#The scheme is aimed to cut down wastage, duplication and leakages and enhance efficiency in the delivery of welfare schemes, as also to improve targetting, reduce corruption, eliminate wastage, control expenditure and facilitate reforms.

How will the direct cash transfer scheme benefit the economy?

# By putting money into the hands of the poor the government is empowering the poor who can buy things in the market. This sudden rise in the poor people's purchasing power will help boost the market and the economy.

Most polluted city in world

India's silicone valley Bengaluru has been rated among top polluted megacities in the world, claims a new study, using data collected by NASA's high-tech satellites.
Scientists at Tel Aviv University tracked pollution trends for 189 megacities, including Mumbai, New York City and Tokyo, by analysing eight years' worth of data from three of NASA's high-tech aerosol monitoring satellites.
Northeast China, India, the Middle East, and Central Africa are currently leading in pollution increase, including Bengaluru, with a 34 per cent average increase in aerosol concentration between 2002 and 2010, website Tel Aviv University's American Friends (AFTAU) reported.
Europe and Northeast and Central North America are seeing the largest decreases in aerosol concentrations overall, the website said.
Among the cleanest cities were Houston, with a 31 per cent decrease over the time period; Curitiba, Brazil, with a 26 per cent decrease; and Stockholm, Sweden, with a 23 per cent decrease.
Researchers led by Pinhas Alpert of Tel Aviv University's Department of Geophysics and Planetary Sciences tracked pollution trends for 189 megacities’ Metropolitan hotspots where the population exceeds 2 million.
Their method, published in the American Journal of Climate Change, is the first to provide standardised global testing of pollution levels.
Researchers found that the thickest layers of global smog caused by traffic, industry, and natural minerals, among other factors, found over the world's megacities.
Some American cities were on the list of increased pollution levels, including Portland with a 53 per cent average increase and Seattle with a 32 per cent average increase, but Alpert believes these numbers reflect the multiple wildfires that have been happening in the region in the second half of the period examined.
In the future, he hopes to develop a method for separating such natural causes of pollution from man-made pollutants for more accurate data.
However, getting an accurate measurement of pollution is no easy task. On-the-ground monitoring stations do not always provide the most accurate picture monitoring stations depend heavily on local positioning and some cities put stations in urban centers, while others build on the edge of a city.
I'm disappointed with that, I was confident that this award would be going to my birth city hyderabad for sure :P

KFC

Interesting :

There are no KFCs in Tibet in part because the
Dalai Lama wrote them a letter explaining how the mass slaughter of chickens violated Tibet's traditional values. An animal rights group,
PETA, published a letter from the Dalai Lama this week calling on Yum Brands to rethink its decision on placing KFCs in Tibet.

In the letter, the Dalai Lama said that Tibetans
rarely consumed chicken and fish before China
took control of Tibet. Instead, he said, Tibetans traditionally ate larger animals such as yaks - of which fewer had to be killed. The Dalai Lama, exiled in the Indian hill town of Dharamsala since 1959, said that introduction of "industrial food practices" into Tibet would perpetuate animal suffering. He said the mass slaughter of chickens violated Tibet's
traditional values.

There are more than 1,000 KFC outlets in China, which is Yum's fastest growing and most profitable market outside the US. In the end, KFC decided against planting a KFC in Tibet, saying that it wouldn’t really turn a profit.
They said they made the decision long before the Dalai Lama’s intervention.

Person who rescued 25 suicides

Unbelievable !
For 15 years A Brave Businessman Has Rescued 25 Suicides ….

From that day, 15 years ago, his own life would never be the same. The restaurant owner, 51, has rescued 25 people who tried to kill themselves by jumping off the tall bridge.
Al
ways on alert in his wooden motor boat, he has pulled people out of the river’s muddy waters without asking for anything in return. “I couldn’t turn my back on them,” he said. “They are desperate people.”

People admire him and he was awarded a hero’s plaque by city authorities. But even “Superman” can’t save everybody who jumps off the 60-foot-high bridge. At least as many as he has saved . some of have even killed themselves since Grbic’s first rescue.
He said…”When I hear that someone has jumped and I wasn’t there, I really feel bad,” he said. “My eyes are always on the bridge.”

The Pancevo Bridge became a favored suicide spot because,It is only bridge over the Danube, which is bigger and colder and has stronger underwater currents than the city’s other river, the Sava.
Grbic has rescued people of all ages and backgrounds. Some had cancer, others cited poverty or unrequited love.

A woman who jumped seven years ago, at age 18, comes to his fish restaurant every January to celebrate her “second birthday.” She is married now and has a child.
“My heart leaps every time I see her,” he said.

Hampi musical pillars

THE MUSICAL PILLARS OF HAMPI .... AT VITHALA TEMPLE .... HAMPI [ NEAR HOSPET ,KARNATAKA-INDIA]

Previously it is mentioned th
atthe temple has 56 odd musical pillars, but now there are only nine musical pillars which are functional and produce melodious, feet-tapping tunes.

The musical pillars of Vithala temple in Hampi produce melodious and feet-tapping tunes. The solid stone columns in these pillars produce audible sound, when struck with a finger. Systematic investigations on the acoustic characteristics of the musical pillars of mahamandapam (great stage) of the Vitthala Temple have been carried out. The 11 most popular pillars that produce sounds of specific musical instruments are considered for the investigations.

Surprisingly, these pillars are rock solid, not hollow as they would look . A huge rock was used to make the main pillar and the sub pillars were around the main pillar. So basically the sub pillars are carved out in different length and width to make the differences in sound.

The sound produced from these 11 most popular musical pillars was recorded systematically and different nondestructive testing techniques such as low frequency ultrasonic testing, impact echo testing, and in situ metallography were employed on the musical columns of these pillars. The peak frequencies in the amplitude spectrum of the sound produced from various columns in these pillars are correlated with the dimensional measurements and ultrasonic velocity determined using impact echo technique.

The peak frequencies obtained experimentally have been found to have excellent correlation with the calculated flexural frequencies based on the dimensional measurements and ultrasonic velocities of the columns.

This shows the skill of the Stone Mason who could discern the sound probability while cutting the stone to desired sizes and shapes to give different sounds !

Body see through camera

In 1998 ,Sony Accidentally Sold 700,000 Camcorders That Could See Through People's Clothes.

Yes You heard it right,in year 1998 sony sold 700,00 camcorder that had technology to see through your clothes, well what was that? lets check out..

The cameras had special lenses that use infrared light (IR) to see through some types of clothing, such as on dark colored, thin clothing - like swimsuits. The main factor is how well the fabric absorbs IR light waves. It's not for regular digicams, but rather for camcorders with a IR night vision mode, and the resolution is low.

Sony recalled the camcorders when they found out about this, but the night vision camcorders that they subsequently released, some people figured out how to modify the camera to get the see-through-clothing functionality  and hundreds of the modified cameras are for sale on the Internet. The camera with all the filters sells for about $700 brand new, and is easy to obtain.Sony said it has no responsibility for altered or modified products.A lot of people have used this technology for wrong purposes.

We missed this gadget guys, right? ;)

Story of kasab

The story of how Kasab became a terrorist

It was his father's refusal to buy him new clothes on Eid that forced a miffed Ajmal Amir Kasab to quit home, take to crime and then embrace jihad, leading to his death in India.

Until then, the now 25-year-old Kasab -- who was hanged in Pune Wednesday for his role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack -- led a simple life in an impoverished part of Pakistan's Punjab province.

He belonged to a poor family. His father was a food vendor while a brother was a labourer in Lahore. It was in 2005 that Kasab decided to quit home after quarrelling with his father who could not provide him new clothes because of poverty.

The young man soon took to petty crime and graduated to armed robbery. A chance encounter with Jama'at-ud-Da'wah, the political wing of Lashkar-e-Taiba, changed his life for ever. It did not take long for him to sign up for training with the bitterly anti-India Lashkar.

He was last seen in his village six months before the November 2008 Mumbai slaughter. Apparently, he sought blessings from his mother to wage jehad.

The Lashkar reportedly offered to pay his family Rs.150,000 for his participation in the Mumbai attack -- on the assumption he would become a "shaheed" (martyr).

When prosecutors asked him if he had any remorse for his actions, Kasab said he had given it some thought beforehand. He said his trainers had assured him that these things have to be done if Kasab has to be a big man and get rewarded in heaven.

A classmate of Kasab told Reuters that Kasab had left his village in search of work when he was a poor teenage labourer. Another schoolmate remembers taking karate lessons with him.

His neighbour Haji Mohammad Aslam told Reuters: "He comes from a very humble but noble, honest family. His father was a street vendor selling snacks on a cart. Kasab did not send any money home and his family is still as poor as they were before he left. He was probably trapped by some religious group."

Investigators revealed that Kasab had undergone months of commando-style training in an Islamist training camp organised by Lashkar-e-Taiba and conducted by a former member of the Pakistani army.

Kasab was one of a squad of ten who crept into Mumbai on three inflatable speedboats shortly after nightfall on Nov 26, 2008. The group had sailed across the Arabian Sea from Karachi for days, hijacking an Indian trawler on their way and killing its crew.

Donating blood

Health benefits of donating blood

Blood Donation Is GoodReduce the chance of heart diseases
It has been observed that increase in blood iron level increases the chance of heart disease. Iron is involved in the oxidation of cholesterol and this process is believed to be detrimental for the arteries. Increases blood iron level favors this process of cholesterol oxidation and thus leads to heart disease. Regular blood donation helps especially males in loosing iron on regular basis. It helps in reducing the chance of heart attack to one third.
Enhance the production of new Red Blood Cells
As the blood is withdrawn from the donors body there is decrease inblood cells. To replenish it, immediately new cells are produced by marrow andthis way blood gets refreshed. Therefore donating blood helps in stimulating generationof new blood cells.
Helps in fighting hemochromitosis
Hemochromitosis is a genetic disorder; also know as iron overload disorder wherein iron accumulates in the body tissue because or improper iron metabolism. This condition may lead to organ damage.Though this problem is uncommon in Indians, people with little iron overload also can easily donation blood and reduce their iron content. Taking example from other countries, one in every 300-400 people in England suffers from this disorder and American Red Cross blood services accept such donors as safe donor as it’s a genetic disorder, it won’t be harmful to the person receiving blood from such donors.
Burns calories
One can diet or remain fit by donating blood regularly. One pint of blood (450 ml) when donated burns 650 calories in donor’s body.
Invigorated feeling in elderly people
It has been mentioned in various sites though not proved that elderly people in good health have reported feeling invigorated or reenergized by giving blood on a regular basis.
Basic blood test is done
Apart from all these benefits a donor gets a mini blood test done before donating blood. This includes Hematocrit i.e. HB level test, Blood pressure is measured, body weight is checked. After the blood is collected it tested for 5 major diseases. Those are Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis and malaria. Donor is immediately informed if any of these test found to be positive.

Grafting a girls hand to her feet

Chinese doctors grafted the hand of a 9 year old girl to her foot until they could reattach it to her arm!

A tractor ran over and completely severed 9 year old Ming Li’s hand from her arm. The arm was in too bad of shape for doctors to rea
ttach it immediately. To preserve the hand, they grafted it to her foot for two months until her arm healed enough. Then, they reattached it back to her arm. She can now move her wrist again and her hand is pink which indicates good circulation. In the next two years she’ll undergo 2 more surgeries to improve her hand functions and to remove her scars.

Mind boggling facts about human brain

  1. Nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as fast as 170 miles per hour. Ever wonder how you can react so fast to things around you or why that stubbed toe hurts right away? It’s due to the super-speedy movement of nerve impulses from your brain to the rest of your body and vice versa, bringing reactions at the speed of a high powered luxury sports car.
  2. The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt light bulb. The cartoon image of a light bulb over your head when a great thought occurs isn’t too far off the mark. Your brain generates as much energy as a small light bulb even when you’re sleeping.
  3. The human brain cell can hold 5 times as much information as the Encyclopedia Britannica. Or any other encyclopedia for that matter. Scientists have yet to settle on a definitive amount, but the storage capacity of the brain in electronic terms is thought to be between 3 or even 1,000 terabytes. The National Archives of Britain, containing over 900 years of history, only takes up 70 terabytes, making your brain’s memory power pretty darn impressive.
  4. Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that enters your bloodstream. The brain only makes up about 2% of our body mass, yet consumes more oxygen than any other organ in the body, making it extremely susceptible to damage related to oxygen deprivation. So breathe deep to keep your brain happy and swimming in oxygenated cells.
  5. The brain is much more active at night than during the day.Logically, you would think that all the moving around, complicated calculations and tasks and general interaction we do on a daily basis during our working hours would take a lot more brain power than, say, lying in bed. Turns out, the opposite is true. When you turn off your brain turns on. Scientists don’t yet know why this is but you can thank the hard work of your brain while you sleep for all those pleasant dreams.
  6. Scientists say the higher your I.Q. the more you dream. While this may be true, don’t take it as a sign you’re mentally lacking if you can’t recall your dreams. Most of us don’t remember many of our dreams and the average length of most dreams is only 2-3 seconds–barely long enough to register.
  7. Neurons continue to grow throughout human life. For years scientists and doctors thought that brain and neural tissue couldn’t grow or regenerate. While it doesn’t act in the same manner as tissues in many other parts of the body, neurons can and do grow throughout your life, adding a whole new dimension to the study of the brain and the illnesses that affect it.
  8. Information travels at different speeds within different types of neurons. Not all neurons are the same. There are a few different types within the body and transmission along these different kinds can be as slow as 0.5 meters/sec or as fast as 120 meters/sec.
  9. The brain itself cannot feel pain. While the brain might be the pain center when you cut your finger or burn yourself, the brain itself does not have pain receptors and cannot feel pain. That doesn’t mean your head can’t hurt. The brain is surrounded by loads of tissues, nerves and blood vessels that are plenty receptive to pain and can give you a pounding headache.
  10. 80% of the brain is water. Your brain isn’t the firm, gray mass you’ve seen on TV. Living brain tissue is a squishy, pink and jelly-like organ thanks to the loads of blood and high water content of the tissue. So the next time you’re feeling dehydrated get a drink to keep your brain hydrated.
