Microsoft Corp is developing a new lineup ofSurface tablets, including a 7-inch version expected to go into mass production later this year, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the company's plans.

Microsoft executives felt they needed to keep pace with the growing popularity of smaller tablets like Google Inc's 7-inch Nexus and the 7.9-inch iPad Mini introduced by AppleInc last October, one person told the paper.

Microsoft declined to comment to the Wall Street Journal. The company could not immediately be reached for comment by Reuters outside of regular US business hours.

Cracking Knuckles myths

Cracking Knuckles:

Cracking your knuckles does not actually hurt your bones or cause arthritis. The sound you hear is just gas bubbles bursting.

Cracking your knuckles (or any of your joints) can have therapeutic benefits. When you crack one of your joints you are pulling the bones that are connected at the joint apart from each other. This process stimulates your tendons, relaxes your muscles, and loosens your joints. Chiropractors do this for spinal joints when your back is sore and stiff, but you can do this on your own for your knuckles, toes, knees, neck, etc.

Unfortunately, there can be too much of a good thing. Cracking your knuckles will never lead to arthritis (despite what your mom keeps telling you), but scientists have discovered that it can cause tissue damage in the affected joints. Knuckle-cracking pulls your finger bones apart which stretches your ligaments. Too much stretching of your ligaments will cause damage to your fingers akin to the arm injuries sustained by a baseball pitcher who throws too many pitches. In addition to making your hand really sore, this ligament damage can also result in reduced grip strength.

How does this work? Your joints, the places in your body where you can bend, are where your bones intersect and are held together by ligaments. These joints are surrounded by a liquid called synovial fluid. When you stretch your ligaments by pulling the bones apart to crack your knuckles a gas in the synovial fluid escapes and turns into a bubble. This process is called cavitation. Cavitation ends when the bubble eventually bursts, producing that popping sound we know and love. After that, your joints won't be able to crack for another 25-30 minutes while the gas gets reabsorbed into the synovial fluid.

Irom Sharmila story

World's longest hunger-striker Irom Sharmila charged with trying to commit suicide

It was a piece of theatre that appeared little short of absurd.
Activist Irom Sharmila, a woman from India’s north-east who has been force-fed for the past 12 years, was flown to Delhi so that a judge could charge her with trying to commit suicide. The 40-year-old declined to play along.
“I do not want to commit suicide. Mine is only a non-violent protest,” the activist told the judge, according to the Press Trust of India. “It is my demand to live as a human being. I love life. I do not want to take my life but I want justice and peace.”
The activist known as the Iron Lady of Manipur launched her fast in November 2000 to protest over the killing of a group of civilians by paramilitary forces and to demand the repeal of legislation that provides effective immunity to soldiers. Since then she has refused to eat, drink or even brush her teeth with water.
Refusing to end her fast until the so-called Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is withdrawn from all of Manipur, she has been repeatedly detained and fed twice a day by a tube attached to her nose. In 2006, she brought her protest to Delhi where she was arrested by police and charged under section 309 of the Indian penal code; the slow nature of the system means her case is only now reaching court.
“The magistrate said to her ‘if you plead guilty the [matter could be dropped],’’ said Svetlana Correya, from the Human Rights Law Network and a member of the activist’s defence team. “But she did not want to plead guilty. She said ‘I’m not trying to commit suicide but this is a form of protest’.”
Ms Correya said the judge said he had no option but to adjourn the case until May 22 when the court will hear evidence and Ms Irom will have to attend again. A spokesman for the Delhi police failed to respond to queries.
Ms Irom is due to be flown back to Manipur on Tuesday, escorted by four police officers and a three-strong medical team. She is kept in the secure wing of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in the city of Imphal where twice a day she is fed a liquid mixture of protein, carbohydrates and vitamins. She rarely gets to see the sunshine.
Following her court hearing, Ms Irom insisted her fast would continue and said she was following the example of Mohandas Gandhi, the “father of the nation”. Taking hold of the feeding tube attacked to her nose, she told said: “This has become a part of my body. I think it’s an integral to my struggle.”
She added: “As a human being, I am a natural phenomenon. But this is not a natural phenomenon.”
After deciding to launch her fast, she has bad barely any contact with her family, reckoning that if she were to meet her mother, Shakhi Devi, who lives little more than a mile from where Sharmila is held, she would feel tempted to end her action. “I feel that we came here alone and that we pass away alone,” she said. “I don’t want others to judge me to do this or that.”
Manipur has been rocked by five decades of violence stemming from the actions of more than 40 militant groups demanding independence from India. The state has responded by dispatching tens of thousands of security personnel, who have been repeatedly accused of human rights abuses. A government panel is currently hearing evidence regarding claims of extra-judicial killings.
The activist, who has won a number of international human rights awards, said the state’s chief minister, Okram Ibobi Singh, had done nothing to improve the situation and claimed he was only focussing on his own business interests. “Everything in Manipur is upside down,” she said.
Asked about comparisons that have been made between her and other celebrated activists such as Nelson Mandela, she added: “I don’t like to worship human beings. All human beings are two sides, good and bad, in their character. So when we worship a person, we worship the bad side of the person.”
Reflecting on the 12 years that have passed since she stopped eating, the activist said: “I never thought about [my] situation when I started. I just felt I was a foundation stone.”

BlackBerry 10 review

BlackBerry 10: Big Changes & A New Experience

BlackBerry's next operating system will be here soon and they're going straight from version 7 to 10! Hitesh Raj Bhagat outlines the main features and speaks to a few experts for their verdict

In a world where glitzy smartphones with gorgeous, expansive touchsreens rule the roost,BlackBerry seems to have been left behind.According to a recent report by IDC,things dont look so good for RIMs beleaguered BlackBerry service and platform.Android still rules the roost with 68.3% global smartphone market share and IDC predicts that it will still be around the 63.8% mark in 2016.Meanwhile,BlackBerrys current 4.7% share is predicted to be 4.1% by 2016.The situation may not be as grim as it appears though, because RIM may yet have an ace up its sleeve.ET got a chance to experience RIMs newest BlackBerry 10 platform or BB10 for short completely new from the ground up.The devices currently doing the rounds are developer units, released so that app developers can get a head start with porting existing apps over to the new platform before it arrives. This is already a step in the right direction because one of the primary complaints against BlackBerry is limited apps.Gone is the stodgy, serious interface in its place is a sleek, slick and superfast interface that is very much designed for both work and play.BB10 is built using the QNX platform just like the PlayBook.Granted, there may be some inspiration drawn from the current popular smartphone platforms an app drawer with multiple rows of apps,a pull-down notification tray, notifications on the lock screen and so on.But it also brings some interesting firsts to the table. For instance, there is no home button instead, the area around the screen is touch sensitive (see the graphic on the left for information on more interesting features). After using BB10 himself,Varun K r i s h n a n,e d i t o r i n ch i e f o f FoneArena.com,a popular phone news/reviews blog, was quick to comment. One has to admit that the BB interface has been a boring affair and RIM is trying to change that with BB10.RIM seems to have cracked the social aspect in BB10 but what remains to be seen is the application aspect this is crucial to the success of any platform. He further pointed out that The final hardware is still to be seen but I'm sure RIM won't disappoint us with the hardware.I think that the time to market would also be critical. Ashish Bhatia, independent technology writer and former editor of PC World, echoed the sentiment."As a mobile operating system,BB10 definitively seems to have what it takes. The interface, with its combination of taps, swipes and gestures is interesting, intuitive and well-thought out.But circa 2012,an OS alone does not a smartphone make.A lot depends on how much support RIM has garnered from third party app developers more so,the top 100 apps that all of us have come to expect on our phones. For instance, will BB10 have apps like Skype,DropBox and YouTube at launch A lot depends on it."Not everyone was as positive though.Clinton Jeff, executive editor of UnleashThePhones.com had this to say: I dont think RIM will be able to take on Android or iOS right now, because the two platforms have a huge lead in terms of numbers, overall ecosystem and apps. But BB10 has a good shot at taking the 'third slot' in the war of the mobile ecosystems the position Windows Phone is trying to claim. Jeff also echoed some analyst claims when he said that Personally I do think it's too late.RIM took way too long to push out their new OS.But I've also noticed that a lot of developers are very interested in BB10.More interested than Microsoft's Windows Phone OS.And as such,I'm inclined to believe that they just might have a chance if the third party developers out there are onboard.Plus from the looks of things,BB10 looks quite great, like a short of mix of Android and Nokia-Intel's MeeGo OS.The interface is a familiar grid but that might mean folks are more willing to try out a BB10 phone instead of a Windows Phone which has such a radically different look and feel. Clinton Jeff signed off with some sound advice for RIM.RIM's challenge will be to pump out great hardware, keep the OS updates coming along quickly and make sure the platform is open enough to tie into various third party services in addition to the core BlackBerry experience that loyal fans enjoy. If only it were that simple.

Hands-on with BB10

What you see here is an 'Dev Alpha' device a pre-release developer device with 4.2-inch touchscreen (1024 x 768 pixels) and dual core processor. The second launch device is expected to have a physical QWERTY and large touchscreen. The final hardware might look completely different, but we'll only know on Jan 30,2013.

EXPECTED PRICE 29,990 onwards
